Columbus did discover a New World but not America. He found Hispaniola and nothing more. All of his life he thought he had landed in India. The myth comes to us through old history books and the telling of the story over and over. Many things become truth if enough people believe them or not. We have had this happen in our time with the Twin Towers and 9-11. History is easy to change if you keep saying the same lie over and over.
THEY WERE ALL CRIMINALS AND PRISONERS.. GOOD WAY TO GET RID OF THEM QUICKLY.. THEN THEY RAN INTO THIS BIG PC .OF LAND :)
Christopher Columbus is thought to be special because of his discovery of the New World. People feel that without his discovery and exploration that the United States would not be in existence today.
No; that was the myth thought to be true before Christopher Columbus discovered that the earth was round. The earth isn't a perfect sphere either. It is egg shaped.
There is a common misconception that historical figures like Christopher Columbus believed the Earth was flat. In reality, most educated people in Columbus's time knew that the Earth was round. The idea that Columbus was trying to prove the Earth's roundness is more of a myth.

New Zealand was formally discovered by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1642. However, the Maori people were there long before that. The country was first discovered by Polynesian explorers, and settled by the Maori people. The common myth taught in New Zealand schools is that a Polynesian explorer named Kupe became the first person to discover New Zealand, around 950 AD. However, there is little evidence to substantiate this myth.
It says in his journal that he saw 3 mermaids, and that they weren't as pretty as he had imagined. This because no, he DIDN'T see mermaids, they were actually manatees. Also, Mermaids are a myth. Not yet proven. Personally, I don't believe in them.
No, that myth is attributed to the Pilgrim Fathers.

Older textbooks use to say this, but the updated modern ones now do not. There are a number of things in history that have been changed due to myth and misunderstanding of history. If you look at an old history book in the map section you will see that the maps shows North American and Europe larger than Africa, but in reality Africa is larger than both. This is one way history was manipulated and a view of the world is presented. Thus, it is the same with information like Columbus.
That it was a common belief among the crew members, and the population at large during the late fifteenth century, that the world was flat.
