There are numerous periods and movements throughout art history. The Gothic and Renaissance are well known periods, as is Impressionism and Cubism. The word popular describes something that is current and liked by a majority of people. Perhaps what the collectors are currently buying could be said to be popular.
Baroque is a type of cathedral that represents a mix of styles from Romanesque to early Gothic and High Gothic. An example of a baroque style cathedral is St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York, New York.
The Renaissance was a major turning point in history with many advancements. One major characteristic of it was that classical styles of the ancient Greek culture were revived and imitated.
There were others, but the Gothic and Romanesque were the medieval architectural styles most commonly talked about.

The Renaissance is characterized by a shift from the Middle Ages' rejection of classical styles. In painting and sculpture, it revisits the naturalism that was popular in the Greek and Roman periods and encorporates it into the subjects important at the time (namely, Christianity.) It also reintegrates the nudity characterized in the classical periods. In architecture, it moves away from the Gothic styles to embrace those popular in Roman times, though some of the Gothic concepts remain. They returned to rounded arches rather than the Gothic pointed arches, solid and monumental structures rather than the light and almost skeletal Gothic structures, and overall rounded design. Some of the characteristics specific to the Renaissance: the use of vanishing points in paintings to add depth (which brought about techniques like foreshortening); an emphasis on the figures' "gaze" (where they are looking); and many of the paintings have encorporated or are based on the specific person who comissioned the artwork, as the renaissance was fueled by the contributions of patrons (example: Michaelangelo gave the devil the face of one of the Pope's advisors in his painting of the Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel.)
