Visual Artists from India are many, and since the cannonical western academic fine art came to stay in India since 1857 (the year in which Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai was founded), there have been many artists. Names like Abalal Rahiman, M. F. Pithawala and the 'self-taught' Raja Ravivarma, are the names of 19th century artists from India.
The 20th century was marked by India's struggle for independence and in art history, the Bengal School with Tagores, Binodebihari Mukherjee and Ramkinker Baij, are important. The same names dominate the auction-market too, but most of these artists work remains 'Non-exportable item' from India.
After 1947 (India's political independece), there was Progressive Group in Mumbai with Hari Ambadas Gade, Sadanand Bakre and others like K. H. Ara, F. N. Souza and Hussain, Raza. Paritosh Sen, Shamal Dutt Ray, Prabhakar Barwe and Prabhakar Kolte are the names in later generations. The Young Indian Art in the late 1990s had names like Anant Joshi, Jitish Kallat, Bose Krishnammachari or Riyas Komu. Of these, Komu is the artist who seems to be favourite of curators - from Abhijeet Tamhane to Robert Storr. Komu's work found place in the 2007 Venice Biennale.

Some painters contribute the amount yields earned from their painting exhibitions to charity. In some or the other way artists also increase the cultural heritage of the country. So artists do contribute to society
