In speaking about civil war, many nations had civil wars in ancient and modern times. If we are speaking about the US, then the US Civil War comes to mind. Some people call it the War Between the States. Either way, the fear among Southern slave holders that they would be marginalized as the US expanded westward was one factor. Closely attached to this was the fear that slavery would somehow be abolished. This was a real threat to the South because most Americans in the heavily populated northern states did not want to see slavery expanded to new US territories. Their fears drove them to rebellion. Patience is a virtue and anyone with a sense of history would realize that slavery, already a moral issue, would become an economic burden. As is the case with many people, history is sometimes hard to predict.Mentioned in this answer is the term of "fear" and it's used as a reason for the South's rebellion. This is not true in all cases. Many high level Southern politicians and wealthy land owners saw the North's policy as an excuse to form a new nation with themselves as the top leaders.

An underlying problem that led to the civil war was sectionalism. The balance of free states vs. slave states.

Another problem was the institution of slavery, more specifically the expansion of slavery as a whole.
