Matter is defined as anything with mass and volume. that is to say, anything we can detect with the sense of touch or taste. Science used to think that matter was EVERYTHING, but only about 50 years ago we started to understand the electromagnetic spectrum. everything NOT matter is called a WAVE. while matter is shown on a Periodic Table, waves are shown on the electromagnetic spectrum.

Basically, waves are all the same kind of unknown material. the difference in waves is only their WAVELENGTH, which is the length of space between a waves' top point and the next one. try searching Google for a picture of the electromagnetic spectrum, because its very difficult to describe in words.

We generally define matter as that which has mass and occupies 3-dimentional space. Energy is not matter, and it is everywhere in the universe. It could be said that the universe is composed of two things: matter and energy. It is matter and energy that fill up spacetime in the universe.

The Universe, as we currently understand it, is made up of matter, anti-matter, energy, dark energy and dark matter. The nature of dark matter is a very widely discussed topic and many of theories state it to be made up of normal matter. Nobody has a clue what dark energy is but it definitely isn't matter.

matter is anything but: light, sound, and thought. Maybe sometimes it could also be the rainbow, electricity, energy, emotions/feelings.
