Best Answer

Sol. (Usually referred to as "the sun".)

The next-closest after that is Proxima Centauri, which is 4.2 light-years away. Curiously, Proxima Centauri is not visible to the naked eye, it is a red dwarf star, and even though it is closest, it is too small and dim to be seen!

The nearest star with planets to the Earth? The star nearest Earth with planets orbiting it is the Sun. According to the International Astronomical Union (IAU), Eight planets orbit the Sun. Of them, the four terrestrial planets are closest to the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. The Sun's terrestrial asteroid belt separates the terrestrial, inner Solar System planets from the outer Solar System's gas giants, Jupiter and Saturn, and ice giants, Uranus and Neptune. Beyond the Sun's eight planets are the Kuiper belt and the Oort cloud, which are also made up of icy objects, including Pluto. In 2006, the IAU formally designated Pluto as a dwarf planet due to it sharing some certain aspects of the Sun's planets. The main difference is that dwarf planets do not create their own orbital path around the Sun, mainly because their gravitational pull is not strong enough due to their size. These dwarves get their name from their relative miniscule size compared to the Sun's planets. Dwarf planets of the Sun's asteroid and Kuiper belts share an orbital path around the Sun with small Solar System bodies and possibly with other dwarf planets. Pluto is a binary planet, because its gravitational center--called a "barycenter"--lies between itself and Charon. Despite this, the IAU recognizes Charon as a satellite of Pluto. The nearest star with planets to the Sun?Astronomers do not know which star other than the Sun is the nearest star with planets. But, the question of which star having planets is nearest to the Sun should be modified, to, "What is the nearest star system with planets?" Proxima Centauri, of the binary star system Alpha Centauri, is the star that comes closest to the Sun during its path. It is gravitationally related to the binary stars Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B. A binary star system is a system containing a gravitational center--called a "barycenter"--that lies between two or more stars, as opposed to within one of the stars. Astronomers have not confirmed that planets exist in that system, but have located an object, called "Alpha Centauri Bb," that may be a planet orbiting in the Alpha Centauri system. If it is, then Alpha Centauri would be the closest star with planets other than the Sun.
The nearest star is Proxima Centauri, which is about 4.2 light years away. Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf star, and we have not determined if it has any planets.

The next closest star(s) are the double-stars of Alpha Centauri, which is believed to have planets.
