Flagellates are single-celled protists. There are two main groups. The Peranema belong to the group that ingests it's food (microscopic particles). The other group (Dinoflagellates) are similar to bacteria, and include algae. They don't eat whole food, but take in food that is already partly digested, and are important photosynthesisers in lakes and oceans. The flagella (whip-like apendages) are used for locomotion.
