Of many possible ways to approach this answer, one good one is this: Germany lost because Hitler refused to listen to his generals. At several critical times during the war, he got excellent advice from his generals that he disregarded out of hand, because he felt they were wrong. Listening to and following the advice of those generals at the time, could have made the course of the war in Europe much different. That is one reason Germany lost World War II. There are many others.
The Great War was, at the time, unique. When the next war started, the names World War One and World War Two were used because World War One was no longer a one-of-a-kind huge multinational war.

The most important, I believe, was George S. Patton, one of the greatest generals in American history. Read up on him in the book "Patton" in the Great Generals series.
One of the most well known generals was Robert E. Lee. Another famous Confederate general was Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. There were plenty of other generals, but we typically don't learn all of their names, just as with any other war.
During World War II, there were a total of five four-star generals who commanded the US Army. These generals were George Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Henry "Hap" Arnold, and Omar Bradley. Each of these generals played a crucial role in leading the US Army to victory during the war.
