Once your car loan is completely paid off, obtain a car title lien release from your lender so your state BMV or DMV can put the car title in your name.
If the vehicle has a lien, the title shouldn't be lost, the lienholder should have it. Once the vehicle is paid in full, they will mail you the title.
No, you can only replace a lost title. If the vehicle had a lien from the bank, a replacement title will still show the lien.
Apply for a replacement or duplicate. You can apply for a replacement, but the title will most likely be sent to the lien holder. If that happens, you need to call the lien holder to let them know that it will be coming and to let you know when they get it. If it is sent to you, then you will need to take it to the lien holder and have them sign off on it again.
Contact the DMV for a replacement title. When you do this, they should also be able to give you the name of all lien holders on the vehicle. This is the easiest way.
Request from the DMV the lien holder's name and address. With this you can contact them and request the nature of the lien. This should give you some idea the reason for the lien and help you determine the legality of it.
If you are the rightful owner of the car, you could file for lost title. Otherwise, I'm not sure it would be legal. If you default on your loan, without a title the lien holder would have a difficult time collecting
Forever. But what you can do is ask for a release of lien from the dealer. Once you get a release of lien from the dealer, you go threw the normal titled process in your state to obtain a lost title.
I believe one can go to your local DMV office and apply for a lost title. You will need to have your normal information, proof of purchase, insurance, license that sort of thing. It should take about 6 weeks after you have applied to receive it. beware if the vehicle has a lien on it. you will need a lien release letter from the bank.. If the original owner didnt pay off the debt the bank wont grant you a letter and you will be stuck with a worthless vehicle that cant be titled or registered
You can get a bill of sale, which only entitles you to possess it. You can't get it registered without the title. If you're buying a vehicle with "no title" or "lost title", you may have a car with a large lien from a bank or finance company on it.
I purchased a 2003 Mits and paid it off years ago and when I tried to get a duplicate title (lost the original) the DMV said there is a lien on it and I have to have citi financial release the lien and send me a letter with the VIN number listed on the letter along with a signature and release of the lien. The VIN number is JA3AJ26E53U100625 the names on the titles are Barbara J. Dixon & Bernel Dixon Jr. 8903 Cedar Top Dr. Houston, Texas 77088 Could you PLEASE send me the letter as stated I cannot ride around with no title in the car and need to get it registered to sale. I have been to the DMV 3 times and still having trouble getting the duplicate Thank You for your help in this matter
Take the car to your local DMV and request a duplicate title. They will explain the process. If you are wanting a title on a vehicle passed thru relatives, or many hands it is easier to do a lien for the storage of the vehicle than try to hunt down people that have moved or are unlocatable. Lost title form is pink and you CAN try that - time is why we do the lien for storage, also so no fees for bonding around silent title will be needed (CA answer)
If you still owed money when they closed shop SOMEBODY must own your note, and will find you to get you to make payments. If you paid it off but lost the title or payoff note, contact your DMV, they should know you own it outright.
