USB flash drives are becoming more and more common. They do not usually come with drivers as Windows Me, 2000, and XP come with generic drivers already installed. This way all you need to do is plug the drive in, Windows will recognise it and you will automatically see the drive in My Computer. Windows 98, especially in it's second edition (also known as Windows 98SE), handles USB very well, however there are no generic drivers preinstalled in the operating system, so you will need to install some additional drivers for it. Some manufacturers do provide the drivers on CD, others have them available to download, and others simply do not have them available at all. So if you are using Windows 98, and you do not know the manufacturer of the flash drive, or you can't find the drivers, what can you do? Well, there are some Generic Windows 98 USB Mass Storage Device drivers available that should work. These drivers should work with most "USB Mass Storage Devices". This means that these drivers will work many makes and models of the following:

USB Flash Drives Digital Photo and Video Cameras (that connect to the PC via USB) USB Hard Drives MP3 Players Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) The drivers can be downloaded from the following link:

What could prevent the hard drive from loading Windows 98SE when attempting to reinstall it?

Preparing a Hard drive for Windows 98Usually, the problem is with the state of the hard drive at the time of the istallation. There are two utilities included on the 'Windows Start Up Disk', one of which is 'fdisk', and the other is 'format.' These utilities must be used in the proper order to insure that the disk is ready for the Widows installation. First, from the DOS prompt A:\ type in 'fdisk'. Then, select the appropriate option to create a partition on the hard drive. (Note: Any data currently on the hard drive will be lost! Be sure to back up all data prior to re-installing Windows!) I recommend creating at least two partitions, one being for the operating system, and the other being a virtual disk to store software, documents, and anything elese that is important. I suggest assigning one third of the disk to the operating system, which is usually on the drive designated as 'c', and the the rest of the drive to one or more virtual disks. This protects your critical data if the operating system is compromised. The partition to be used for the operating system (Windows) must be made active prior to leaving the fdisk program. The computer should be re-booted upon exiting fdisk, to insure that the changes are properly made. After rebooting, again from the DOS prompt A:\, type 'format c:'. You will be asked if you are sure you want to do this, because, again, any data on the specified drive will be lost. After c drive is formatted, format any virtual drives which you have created. This should prepare the hard disk drive for installing Windows 98. Be aware that Windows 98 has a minimum space requirement, which, if not met, will prevent Windows from installing.

How can you Purchase Win 98SE hard drive replacement?

A typical Windows 98 computer would have used a standard IDE drive. Any drive under 127 GB should work fine. You can still purchase IDE drives on online sites like Newegg, or used on ebay. Drives over 127 GB will not have the remaining capacity visible due to limitations of pre-2002 BIOSes and Windows 98 itself.

How do you downgrade from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows 98 SE?

If you installed Windows XP in this method you can downgrade. That is, if you upgraded Windows XP from Windows 98 SE means you can downgrade Windows XP by removing Windows XP in Control panel, Add/Remove programs. Then the first Operating System (windows 98Se) will come. I've had to do this many times at my work. The best way is to boot with a 98 bootdisk then use fdisk to wipe the hard drive. Then restart the machine with the bootdisk and 98 CD in it. Choose the option to run setup from the CD and then follow the instructions. Setup will format the hardrive and then restart to begin installing the OS. Why in the world would you want to install 98. Microsoft no longer provides support for 98 and XP SP2 is far superior to 98 in the first place. It is a no brainer. Keep XP SP2 and forget the archaic 98.

Where can you find step-by-step instructions on how to reformat a hard drive and reinstall Windows 98SE?

To reformat your hand drive using Win98 you need a Win98 boot floppy with reformat and fdisk options on it. To get started, insert the floppy and reboot the system. After the boot you will get a screen that asks you if you want to start windows with CD-Rom support, press the shift and F5 keys and you will get the prompt (a:\) type format c:/s This will reformat your hard drive with the system tools installed. If you need to create a new portion follow the steps above and when you get the a:\ prompt type fdisk and follow the instructions.I have reinstalled Windows 98SE after reformatting my hard drive several time. I was never able to directly install SE. First I had to install Windows 98, then insert the 98SE CD and go through the whole installation process again. I could never figure out why I had to first install 98 and then SE, but at least it works for me doing it that way.If you had Win98, and then bought the upgrade, you would need both disks to reinstall. Start with the new disk, the upgrade. At some point it will ask you to insert the old disk into the CD drive, so it can verify that you actually had a copy, and weren't just trying to get the upgrade because it costs less, without buying the original or older version. Sounds like that might be what happened.
