Originally, the Nez Perce built earth lodges. It was made by digging an underground room and putting a wood frame over it. Then they would cover the frame with earth, cedar bark and tule mats. They were either small round lodges made for one family or very large oval longhouses to house many people. Eventually, they started using tipis.
