Friedrich Nietzche was a German philosopher who has become famous for saying that "God is dead." He did not mean that God died. Instead, he believed God never existed, and that humans have reached the point in history when they are beginning to understand that God doesn't exist. Nietzche declared that humans don't need to believe in a God, and that they are better off just believing in their own strength and willpower. Nietzche believed in willpower so much--and in the "death of God" so much--that many of his beliefs were used by the Nazis of World War II to help prove that starting World War II and having concentration camps to kill millions of people were good things. As a result, many people do not like or respect Nietzche in our modern times.
Friedrich Nietzsche's statement "God is dead" refers to the idea that traditional religious beliefs have lost their influence and relevance in modern society. Nietzsche argued that the decline of belief in God would lead to a moral and existential crisis, as people would need to create their own values and meanings in a world without divine guidance.
Nietzche said God was dead.
Nietzche is basically arguing that the philosophy and science that man has developed has given him the ability to see the world without God and, therefore, God (as a concept) is dead. He does not mean literally that men have taken God's life.
