A boy named Ichiro Yamada which through a span of two years in which the book takes place comes to realization of what it means to be "Good Japanese." He meets Kenji a war veteran who slowly dies by losing inches of his maimed leg to infection. Then there is Emi, a woman who pleases her desire for her husband by engaging in coitus with other men. And then there is Mr. Carrick a white man during the period which provides Ichiro with work despite he is a No-No Boy. This all takes place in the years of 1942-1944. The book's tone is rather dyspeptic, mostly caused by Ichiro's paradigm, but John Okada (the author) uses rhetoric to evoke sophomoric and lighthearted comic relief.
