The document is believed to be the first declaration from Great Britain, and according to dates was signed over a year before the Declaration of Independence. The document was created following the battle of Lexington, the first battle of the American Revolutionary War.
The Halifax Resolves were the first resolution given by a colony to its delegates to join other colonies in the declaration of independence from Great Britain. It did not instruct the delegates to introduce a "resolution of independence", only to join in a declaration of independence.
