The oboe has a double reed, and is the highest-pitched instrument to have a double reed. It is a soprano voice, and it plays a little over three octaves. The word "oboe" comes from two French words--"haut", meaning "high", and "bois", meaning wood. The oboe as we know it originated in France in the 1600s, but its double-reeded ancestors have been depicted in art and referenced in literature from ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, the Middle East, and the Far East. It is commonly held that the oboe directly evolved from the shawm, which may have traved to Europe from Asia during the Crusades. Variations and relatives of the oboe include the oboe d'amore, the English Horn, and the bassoon.
