Officially Its "The Netherlands" "Holland" is for the Provinces Zuid- And Noord- Holland. However, Most people Just use "holland" For all twelve Provinces. (The Netherlands in general) The confusion between the two names are probably caused by Tourists.
Mainly farmlands. The provinces are Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen.
The western part of the Netherlands is often referred to as Holland. Holland actually exists out of two provinces, North and South Holland. People often refer to the Netherlands as Holland, which is ofcourse not right, it's just 2 out of the 12 provinces.
Yes, sort of. When the Netherlands was formed some provinces set off against the Bourgundians to form their own land, in the 16th century, also the provinces in what is now Belgium and Luxembourg. The British called all those provinces the Low Lands. So originally there were more then one, which explains why the Netherlands is plural. In Dutch they say Nederland, which is not plural.
The Seven Provinces refers to the provinces of the Netherlands that successfully rebelled against Spanish rule, from 1568 onwards. From about 1581 on the provinces were as follows: * Holland * Zeeland * Utrecht * Gelre (Gelderland) * Groningen * Drenthe * Overijssel

In 1581. The seventeen provinces of the Netherlands were a possession of Spain. This included modern-day Belgium, Luxembourg, parts of France and Germany and today's Holland, or the Netherlands. The seven northern provinces were Protestant and joined in the 1581 Act. By that time the Eighty Years War for the Netherlands Independence from Spain had already been going on for thirteen years. The war did not end until 1648, after which the seven northern provinces were recognized as independent.
