There are two possible answers to this:

  1. The source of the smell may simply be 'in your head'. If your nose and related organs have suffered some damage then it just simply goes ahead and produces all sorts of responses to things that aren't really there. Boxers suffer from bouts of this.
  2. The human organs of smell are degenerative. This means that our distant ancestors were able to smell a lot more things than we are now. This condition has arisen through disuse. The old adage 'use it or lose it' applies in evolutionary development. Now this condition didn't come about suddenly but in scattered loses amongst the general population, and there still is a widely varying spectrum of smelling abilities amongst individuals. So, quite naturally, there are things some people can smell that others cannot.

I found out that your nose never stops growing. I am 54 years old , so I can smell my dirty laundry in my small apartment.
