Odysseus did not warn hiscrew about Scylla because he was afraid they would all hide under the decks and not fight the monster. He needed them to be brave, so they could escape the narrow passage between Scylla and Charybdis
He chooses Scylla over charybdis because if they go to charybdis they would all die, but if they go to Scylla only six would die because Scylla has six heads and six mouths to eat with.
Because Charybdis, being a whirlpool, would destroy Odysseus' entire ship and subsequently, all of the men on it. Scylla, on the other hand, would only kill the men that she could snatch up. Therefore, if Odysseus were to pass closer to Scylla, more of his men would survive.
yes, because his men would of got scared and ran away from Odysseus or they might of killed him
The strait is narrow and so Odysseus has to pass by either Scylla or Charybdis. Circe tells Odysseus that Charybdis is far more dangerous, as 3 times a day it sucks in all the waters around it. This would completely suck in Odysseus and his ship if he is sailing too close to Charybdis. Circe advises Odysseus to go to Scylla's side of the strait, for despite the danger of the monster, it is preferable to lose a half-dozen men than the whole ship.
bc @ least 6 of his men would be eaten.
Calypso told Odysseus that if he did not sacrifice six men to the Scylla he would lose his whole ship to Charybdis. If he had told his men of the dangers they might not have agreed to sail through Scylla's passage.
Arming himself for battle with Scylla provided Odysseus with at least a chance to defend himself and his crew against the monster. While he couldn't defeat Scylla, being armed allowed him to make the best of a difficult situation and focus on minimizing casualties.
Circe counsels Odysseus against engaging Scylla in battle because Scylla is a terrifying sea monster with multiple heads that could prove too difficult to defeat without sustaining heavy casualties. Circe advises Odysseus to choose the lesser of two evils by avoiding a direct confrontation with Scylla, as losing some of his men to her would be better than risking the entire crew in a futile battle.
The two female monsters Odysseus is trying to avoid would be Scylla and Charybdis. Charybdis literally sucks in the sea and regurgitates it while Scylla lives on a cliff and snatches objects down below her.
Charybdis would kill all of Odysseus' men because she would suck them up in her whirlpool but, she was never given that opportunity. As for the other monsters, the Cyclops planed on eating all of the men and saving Odysseus for last. The Sirens would have allured all of Odysseus' men to them and devoured them and Scylla would continue to grab for six more men until there were none left.
By keeping the knowledge to himself he likely saved most his men, save the six that were lost to Scylla, as a ship divided as his men would have been would not have made it at all.
