They went to Angel Island.
what is it
The immigrants had to go through immigration stations such as Ellis Island and Angel Island. Where they were checked for disease, and had to go through a government inspector to see if they met the legal requirements for entering the United states. Which included proving they had never been convited of a felony, demonstrating that they were able to work, and showing that they had some money. Some immigrants would be held for days, months, and even some up to a year for inspection.
Until late 1954, Ellis Island was the first stop for immigrants coming to America by way of ship. Now-a-days, however, the island serves a tourist attraction, and is an excellent place to learn about America's golden age of immigration.
The immigrants that passed through Ellis island moved to a variety of places, generally based on their ethnicity. In general, the Irish immigrants went to Boston or New York, German immigrants moved to the Midwest, and English immigrants stayed on the east coast. However, there are always exceptions.
