Answer: You keep money, and all non-members items. You also keep members-only items, but you can't use them until you get a membership again - so you may want to try and sell some of the items before your membership expires. Bank space used to be a problem for ex-members; with a recent upgrade, this is no longer a problem (members-only items are kept in a separate bank space, and don't count towards your nonmembers item limit).
When their membership times out they will become "member" accounts. But any bonuses will not be credited to your account if you go to a free-player world.
