S-series brakes are notorious for being much different than any other cars brakes. They have alot more "Feel" to them and seem harder than other vehicles. This is normal. As long as they dont loose pressure they are fine

Rear brakes do not have to be replaced too often. It's really hard to tell without looking at it. What you can do is to replace front brakes and test drive it, if you feel that your car brakes works just fine you do not need to replace rear brake shoes.

Compared to todays modern brake systems they will feel hard. Also depends on if they are power brakes or not. Some cars of that era did not have power brakes and they were very hard to push.
A problem with your anti-lock braking system. Your brakes and your ABS are two different issues. Your ABS system keeps your brakes from locking when coming to a hard stop. If it is not working correctly your light will come on. Best to have a shop look at it.
