By far the best method to slow down is to look at the road ahead to work out if you need to slow down, and then to back off the accelerator (gas pedal) and let the car slow naturally so that you arrive at the next bend/junction (or whatever) without actually having to use the brakes or down-shift at all.
Otherwise, use the brakes, they are cheaper and easier to replace when they wear out than the engine/transmission.
The plane began its descent towards the airport, gradually lowering in altitude. The mountaineers carefully navigated the steep descent down the rocky slope.
Second gear. Using the brakes on a downgrade is very hard on them and can (frequently does) lead to early brake failure. You may need to use your brakes a bit on a steep downgrade, but a lower gear is the better choice.
no
An extremely fast-moving part of a river, caused by a steep descent in the riverbed.
decent and descent are not similar words. Decent means a person who is considerate, helpful and kind and good. Descent means to lower oneself, to go down into a shaft or a steep hill, or to desecnd.
yes
Steep downgrades, when you need it to control your descent.
It could be air in the brake line, or the brakes getting too hot from too much friction by using the brakes on a steep hill or riding the brakes, or there could be a problem with the master cylinder.
An automotive chassis controls feature that drivers can activate when negotiating steep downhill gradients. This automatic speed control brakes each wheel individually as required, reducing forward motion to slightly more than walking speed. Drivers can vary their speed by using the accelerator or brake. This makes for a smoother, more easily controlled descent as drivers can concentrate fully on steering.
You probably have a warped brake rotor. This can happen when the brakes get over heated, usually when "riding the brakes" while going down a long steep hill. Use a lower gear rather than keep continuous pressure on the brakes. The rotors will have to be replaced.
I could be your rotors are need to be reground. Let your brake man check out your brakes.
Friction between the brake pads and the wheel drum causes the build up of heat in the braking system. Use a lower gear when descending a steep hill.
