When did the Lewis and Clark expedition return to St Louis?

3years after starting the expedition

How long did it take for Lewis and Clark to explore the Louisiana territory?

Before Lewis met up with Clark, he began the expedition on August 30, 1803 in Pittsburgh PA. Lt. William Clark would offer to join Lewis on the expedition weeks later on October 13, 1803 at Camp Dubois (in present-day Indiana). In spring 1805, they continued to the headwaters of the Missouri River, struggled across the Continental Divide, and headed west along the Salmon, Snake, and Columbia Rivers to the Pacific. The expedition then ended on September 23, 1806 upon their return to St. Louis from Oregon. So the expedition took about 3 years.

How did the Lewis and clark expedition fail?

The expedition's goal as stated by President Jefferson was "to explore the Missouri River, & such principal stream of it as, by its course & communication with the water of the Pacific ocean may offer the most direct & practicable water communication across this continent, for the purposes of commerce." In addition, the expedition was to learn more about the Northwest's natural resources, inhabitants, and possibilities for settlement. In the end, they were able to find and categorize 122 new animals and 178 plants, mapped the geography, and achieved friendlier relations with the natives. However, they did not find an all water route to the Pacific Ocean. It did not fail, as they were able to reach the Pacific Ocean and return alive with many notes and drawings on what they measured and saw. I guess you could say it failed in the sense that there was mediocre communication with the natives and they did not explore the entirety of the Louisiana Territory.

What years did Lewis and Clark explore?

Before Lewis met up with Clark, he began the expedition on August 30, 1803 in Pittsburgh PA. Lt. William Clark would offer to join Lewis on the expedition weeks later on October 13, 1803 at Camp Dubois (in present-day Indiana). From there, they sailed down the Ohio River towards St. Louis. In spring 1805, they continued to the headwaters of the Missouri River, struggled across the Continental Divide, and headed west along the Salmon, Snake, and Columbia Rivers to the Pacific. They landed at the mouth of the Columbia River, Astoria, Oregon. The expedition then ended on September 23, 1806 upon their return to St. Louis from Oregon. If you believe that the expedition began in Pittsburgh, then it took 2 years and 25 days.If you believe that the expedition began when Clark joined then it took 1 year 11 months and 11 days.If you don't believe me that the expedition began in Pittsburgh and NOT St. Louis, then follow the related link to the Louis and Clark Journals' first entry. As we all know, the common American history textbook likes to smudge the details.
