The USS Maine blew up and sank on 15 Feb 1898. Although the war was fought in the Pacific (Admiral Dewey's squadron attacking the Spaniards in the Philippines) and in Cuba, the war was against a European nation, Spain. So, it was a Spanish-American War fought in those regions.

It is inaccurate to call Latin America a third world country as it is not a country, but a region. Some Latin American countries are very modern and up-to-date, while others are lacking in modern amenities and industry.
The FIRST steel US battleship classified as a battleship was the USS Texas, commissioned in 1895. However, her sister the USS Maine which blew up in Cuba in 1898, which started the Spanish-American War in 1898 was commissioned the same year but was classified as an Armored Cruiser. The USN began building "steel" warships in about 1883. The USN wanted nothing more to do with wooden boats/ships after 1883...which is why the USN burned most of the WWII wooden PT boats when WWII was nearing it's end in 1945.
The bongo drums were created in the late 1800's to early 1900's. A exact date is not known. They originated from Cuba for Latin American Dances.
A new weapon was used. The Aircraft Carrier! The aircraft carrier replaced the battleship as a major weapon, following the sinking of the British Battleship HMS Prince of Wales, and Battlecruiser HMS Repulse, by Japanese aircraft on December 10, 1941. After this date, NO naval officer doubted the power of airplanes over the battleship.
The instrument of surrender was signed aboard the battleship USS Missouri on 02 September 1945.
