After being dormant for over 300 years, Montserrat's volcano, the Soufrière Hills, started to show volcanic activity on the 18th July 1995, when smoke rose from the top of Chance's Peak and tremors shook the island. It has been active ever since.
You can't measure an eruption on the Richter scale.... The richter scale is purely for earthquakes. You can measure the eruption on something called a mercalli scale however which has 12 "levels" 1 being the lowest. Monserrat measured about 8/9 on the mercalli
