Once in a while my 12 yr old dog will become very needy breathe heavily and start to shake. what could be wrong with him?

This happened to my cat, she recently died, when you pet gets older they tend to get more tired and loose their bretahe quicker. As for the shaking, usually the animal no control over this, it's just what they do when they get old.
