President Ronald Reagan was badly wounded by a bullet but survived.
He died while he was in office from an assassin's bullet.
No ex-president of the United States has been killed after leaving office. Theodore Roosevelt was hit by a bullet after he was President and was running for another term and was making a speech. The bullet was rather miraculously deflected and did not do him serious damage. So far as I know, that was the only assassination attempt against an ex-president.
I'm guessing it was Ronald Reagan who was shot by John Hinckley jr.
The first president to get married while in office was John Tyler. John Tyler was also the first president to have his wife die while in office.
James A Garfield. he survived 200 days in office and was assassinated.
