Musical Opera was created in Italy in the late-16th century. The first opera is generally thought to be Dafne, by Jacopo Peri. The music for this opera has been lost. The earliest opera for which we have the music and which receives occasional performances is L'Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi, first performed in Mantua, Italy, in 1607.
