he Appendix and the Tonsils seem to have no significant function. And, although not organs, one could argue that the Coccyx and some of the toes are redundant. But not the big toe!

Body structures that don't seem to have a function?

the appendix has no function There was an article on the internet recently that said that scientists think that the function of the appendix is that it stores bacteria so that if one's system is cleared of all "good" bacteria, the appendix can then start a new supply of those necessary bacteria. If this is true, then the appendix DOES have a function.

What is the function of a appendix?

There is no longer a function for our appendix in modern society, it is left over from our prehistoric predecessors. Some times it can collect food and bacteria, causing its self to rupture, since it no longer can function at respelling its own contents

What do you use your appendix for?

The function of the appendix is not known for certain. It has been speculated that they function as an alarm for the immune system. The appendix will hold samples of all of the bacteria present in the large intestine. The body can then detect them and react accordingly. This is similar to how the tonsils are thought to help the immune system by sampling things we swallow to alert the immune system of what we just ingested.

What is the main function of the appendix?

In college text books they do not acknowledge that the appendix has any valuable function. However lets think about it because these are the facts: The appendix stores seeds that you eat and it is part of the digestive tract to absorb nutrients and fluid. Seeds are loaded with nutritional value. They take longer to absorb. If you give your appendix nutrient rich seeds you will have a healthy appendix. If you do something like eat a lot of cooked black pepper this will irritate your appendix cause inflammation and possibly a bursted appendix. This is because of the chemical change with cooked black pepper as a seed that occurs after cooking not in it's raw state.

Any structure that is reduced in function in a living organism but may have been used in an ancestor is known as?

One example would be the vermiform appendix in human bodies. The appendix is a vestigial organ of the digestive system, an organ that has reduced in size and has lost its original function throughout evolution. It is hypothosized that the human appendix are the remains of the cecum organ, a organ that aids in the digestion and breakdown of cellulose in plants. Since humans humans prefered to cook food, the use of the organ was dramatically lowered to a point that it was not needed.
