The governments revenue is referenced to when discussing national saving. National saving = T - G. Where T is for taxes and G is for Government spending. But, to answer your question as to where government revenue comes from, the answer would be: from taxes paid by citizens and bonds sold by the Federal Reserve to the world market.

The government's income all comes from taxpayers in some form or another. The personal and corporate income tax, import and export duties, gasoline taxes, tobacco taxes, license fees, building permits, etc, are all taxes. Medicare and Social Security deductions from your paycheck are taxes disguised as 'insurance premiums'. Fines and court costs are not direct taxes, but they are still paid by taxpayers. Even seigniorage, the difference between the cost of printing money and its value, is eventually paid by the taxpayers through inflation.

Of course taxpayers are the recepients of what taxes provide. And contrary to the above, the government also has many, many other sources of income.

It owns, sells and leases property and buildings, or sometimes just the right to drill or develope the property. The same with water, sea and air rights. They control the airways for TV and Radio (and all other services of that type), and sell or lease and collect fee's for that usage. Many airports, parks, monuments, and the concession stands, novelties, etc., etc, at these places are sources of substantial revenue for the Gov. The post office is a government service...and like the public ones, it sells stamps to those chosing to use it. (It too does collectibles, as do many of the services, especially military). The sale of surplus and excess property, old ships, airplanes, guns, ammo, computers, clothes, cheese, agricultural products it purchases through programs, etc are all sources of income. Many times, especially in the sciences or engineering, the USG, at a lab, or in one of it's services - like NASA, or through a program, or many other ways, has a patent or right that someone wants to use commercially...that right is sold. the right to do experiments on the space shuttle, or at reactors, or Los Alamos (and many other) labs is available, for a price. And contrary to what the above suggest, many, many of these, and many other sources of buiness and income, are derived from foreign governments, people or corporations....that are not US taxpayers (although likely are other places).

While these are a few, there are simply too many possible sources to list.....but suffice it to say, the USG is business at it's biggest.
