Could be something with the head/heads
That means the engine is running hot for some reason are another. OVER HEATING
It won't cause over heating.....but it can go bad and send a signal that the engine is over heating when it is not.
Check your cooling fan

It can. You should leave the engine running while you add water to the radiator. If you add water with the engine turned off, but while the engine is overheated, you might damage the engine or the radiator.
That means the engine is over heating / running hot for some reason. Check thermostat, Coolant level in radiator, check for coolant leak on engine somewhere. Fix and repair as needed.
Over heating can blow a head gasket
If your engine is over heating it could get too hot and quit running, then start again when it gets cooled off. Otherwise, "something" got too hot and quit working, cools off and works again.
No gas. Low fuel pressure from fuel pump. dirty fuel filter. any other symptoms you know besides just stop running while driving IE over heating running rough.
While your car is running the engine is heating up. While your driving you have air being forced over the radiator cooling it off. When you are sitting still you don't have that air so your engine is heating up even more so the cooling fan comes on to help cool you engine off. Via cooling the radiator.

If your Pathfinder is over heating then you may have an issue with the coolant. You can try adding more coolant to ensure that your car is no longer over heating. You can also double check to make sure your blower is actually cooling your engine.
