States of matter are determined by the amount of Kinetic Energy they have. When a gas becomes a liquid, it loses energy, and the particles slow down enough to affect each other. This is why liquids have a volume.

What term best describes the process by which particles escape from the surface of a nonboiling liquid and enter the gas state?

Evaporation (more for talking about water) or vaporization (as a general term) refers to the process in which a liquid changes into a gas. In evaporation, the liquid turns into a gas at the surface. In boiling, vaporization occurs throughout the liquid.

What is vaporization that occurs on the surface of a liquid?

That would be evaporation; the particles inside the liquid escape from the surface and into the atmosphere/air.

What does a liquid become when its particles have absorbed enough energy to escape the surface?

A gas

Does a liquid become a gas when its particles have absorbed enough energy to escape the surface?

yes

Is vaporization that occurs when particles on the surface of a liquid escape the liquid even when the liquid is below its boiling point?

No; this process is called evaporation.

The formation of a gas resulting from the escape of high-energy particles from the surface of a liquid is known as?

Evaporation

What is the process by which particles escape from the surface of a liquid and enter the gas state called?

This process is called evaporation.

If liquid evaporates what happens?

In a liquid state, particles are moving at many different speeds. At the surface of the liquid, some of the faster-moving particles are able to escape into the air. Slower-moving particles stay in the liquid state. Slower motion means lower average energy, however, and this means lower temperature. As high-energy particles leave the surface of a liquid it then cools the surface on which it is resting. Scientist call this phenomenon evaporative cooling. Evaporating cooling is common and can be very useful.

How solid act like a liquid?

Surface tension-Attractive forces cause particles on the surface of a liquid to pull together and resist from being pushed apart. These particles on the surface are pulled toward the center of the liquid and and sideways along the surface. There are no liquid particles above to pull on them. Particles under the surface are pulled in all different directions. Surface tension is the uneven forces acting on the surface particles of a liquid. Surface tension causes a liquid to act like it has a thin film stretched across the surface.

What state of matter has a liquid particles have enough energy to escape the attractive forces of other particles in the liquid?

freezing

What force acts on the particles of the surface of a liquid?

its surface tension

How do gases form?

When the particles of a liquid gain energy some of them can escape from the surface, and if eventually all of them do this a gas will form. We call this evaporation. If there is sufficient energy for all of them to escape at once, they all move to be far apart and we say the liquid boils.
