The Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba
Asia and Africa are connected by an isthmus. An isthmus is a narrow strip of land connecting two larger land masses. The Isthmus of Suez is in northeast Egypt. It connects North Africa with Western Asia. The isthmus is located between the Gulf of Suez to the south and the Mediterranean Sea to the north. It's between North Africa and the Sinai Peninsula.
The Suez Canal provided Britain with a shorter sea route to its empire and, as the 20th century dawned and oil grew in importance, it provided a short sea route to the oilfields of the Persian Gulf. Britain was therefore committed to protect the canal.
The Suez Canal connects the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. Ships use the Suez Canal as a shortcut between Asia and Europe and the Americas. Thanks to the Suez Canal, they do not have to use the time or fuel to sail all the way around Africa just to get to Europe.
The quickest way by ship from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean is via the Suez Canal. A link to the Wikipedia article on Egypt's Suez Canal is provided.

Gulf of Suez, Red Sea, Gulf Of Aqaba.
The Mediterranean Sea is to the north, the Red Sea is to the east, and the Gulf of Suez is to the west of the Sinai Peninsula.
The Suez Canal separates the Sinai peninsula from the rest of Egypt.
It is the Sinai Peninsula. The Sinai Peninsula looks a lot like a shark tooth or upside-down home-plate in baseball. Its western edge is the Suez Canal and the Gulf of Suez. Its eastern edge is the Gulf of Aqaba and the Israeli/Palestinian-Egyptian border. Its northern coast is on the Mediterranean and its southernmost point is the confluence of the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba at the Red Sea. The canal was completed in 1869. A French company was behind the project. The canal was built by forced labor.
