Civil War
Most people believe in defending their country against a real threat. The problem comes when the threat is revealed to not be a threat after all. This happened in Vietnam, and in Iraq. The U.S. Government used lies and cover-ups to disguise the real reasons these wars were fought, and so people start to question war, no matter what the reasons given for fighting one. They didn't believe that they were "defending their country," but rather fighting for other, less compelling reasons, such as to save face, make money for weapons makers, or seize control of oil.
