There are 1 in 100. Not all are serial killers but many are white collar sociopaths or psychopaths. These cheat people out of money, are dishonest, and don't think they are wrong in what they do.

Are all sociopaths and psychopaths violent at some point in their life?

ALL? No, off course not. Also ask the control question and find evidence for: "Do all people show violent tendencies".

Are there any famous psychopaths or sociopaths who aren't serial killers?

Probably, but just to point out that being a psychopath doesn't mean you have the urge to kill, it just means you don't have the same range of emotions (if any) as "regular" people, which i guess makes it easier to kill. I like to think that most politicians are psychopaths

Are people who suffer from depression dangerous sociopaths and psychopaths?

Not usually.Sociopath and psychopath are entirely different diagnoses than depression. These are considered behavioral disorders. Depression is a mood disorder. It usually produces profound lethargy or the inability to act on one's desires, which means they'd make pretty bad psychopaths because they'd just lie around and not do anything about their desires.

Do sociopaths know what they are?

Sociopaths are extremely narcissistic. They feel life is like a game of Chess. They are the kings, and everyone else are their pawns used to help them win. That is the goal of a sociopath. The chilling goal of a sociopath is to win the game.

Does sociopathy originate in autism?

There is no evidence that supports this theory; however, many famously considered sociopaths (including Jeffery Dahmer and Adolf Hitler), are by some considered autistic. Autism is generally reserved for people with an incapacity for social function who are nonviolent. Similarly, sociopathy is generally reserved for that of violent people. The psychological correlation could remain unrecognized due to fear of "popular opinion" contorting the terms to be synonymous. If sociopathy were linked to autism, it would necessitate being "high functioning" like Asperger's, due to many sociopaths remaining "under the radar" until being outed by some lapse in social behavior. Also, sociopaths are often considered having no interests in sympathy, but still try to gain influence or power over others (through opportunism and violent crimes).

Why isn't there treatment for sociopaths?

Sociopaths (psychopaths) are people who are incapable of experiencing compassion; they never feel shame, guilt, or remorse. Harming a friend, a lover, a parent would have no emotional effect upon a psychopath. Psychopaths regard other people as tools, as resources to exploit. Some are incredible mimics and will go to great lengths to appear "normal", in order to game the system for their own benefit. There is no known treatment which can change psychopaths. Psychotherapy (talk therapy) has no beneficial effect whatsoever upon psychopaths. There are no medications, surgical techniques, or any other methods which have the slightest effect. Extensive clinical literature from such prominent researchers as Dr. Robert Hare makes this fact clear. Psychopathy is completely untreatable. Furthermore, psychopaths see nothing wrong with the way they are. They feel no incentive to change. Their own wrongdoing does not cause them the slightest worry. There are different kinds of people - not all sociopaths are the same and therefore the possibility that some may be willing to change is apparent. Also, the way in which they act and are acted upon by others has more to do with their decisions. Therefore, if they are given a tolerant opportunity, change is possible. A cure may not be.

Can psychopaths show love?

Psychopaths are often very manipulative people, and are generally very skilled at lying. Psychopaths can absolutely fool people into thinking that they love them. However, since true psychopaths do not have any empathy, they are not capable of love in the traditional sense and any "love" that they show is simply manipulative behavior.

Are sociopathic individuals attracted to others of the same ilk?

Sociopaths might find other sociopaths interesting, but would soon fall become bored and frustrated. Sociopaths like easy prey to manipulate, as they like to feel everything is below them. So sociopaths might actually try to avoid other sociopaths.
