The period before records were written or passed orally is often referred to as prehistory. Vedas were tranmitted orally for several hundreds of years before they were written down. They were written down around 5000 years back.

We know much of the history of Western Africa (they left no written records) because of 2 reasons- orally and visitors who came and wrote the history such as al-Masudi, Abu Ubayd al-Bakri, and Leo Africanus. This may be a problem because if the records written may have gotten lost or ruined by other natural/man disasters. Also, if we rely on oral history, it may not be accurate.
