You can transplant most any motor into your Pontiac, which had a gm block originally by the way.
you should be able to unbolt the motor from the firewall on the passenger side of the car

Follow the top radiator hose, to where it intersects with the motor. This would be the thermostat housing. Remove this, and the thermostat will be exposed.

The 455 and 400 was an option motor in the 1972 Pontiac LeMans, yes it will fit. I'm not sure if a beefier tranny was also included?
