There is no specific pinion nut torque that needs to be reached.. You just need to tighten the nut until the correct pinion preload is reached.

It sounds like the pinion nut is not tight enough and the pinion is now moving in and out. This will do bad damage to ring and pinion. You will need to replace crush sleeve in rear end now.

I would say the 2001 would win if it was 5.7 vs 5.3 because the newer 5.3 i believe has more horsepower. but it would depend on gearing.
