How do I change points to electronic ignition on a 5 hp briggs & stratton small engine?
under the flywheel
All the small Briggs engines seem to have a points gap of 0.02 inches
If you are a smoker the cardboard of the pack of cigarettes is the right thickness to set your points. If you are not a smoker probably a cereal box cardboard will do.
If they are bad, then yes. If not, then don't bother replacing them.
i believe it is .010 to .015. you can go to B&S site to find out for sure
Spark plug gap is .030 thousandths on all their engines and if it's old enough to have points, .020 thousandths for all models.
Depending on how this mower got out of tune is how you are going to know how to tune it back. It may be as simple as adjusting the mixture screw on your carburetor, or as difficult as filing the points (older engine) or replacing the diaphragms on the carburetor.
If it has ignition point contacts they may needed cleaning. You have to remove the flywheel and it's cover. Use wd40 on the points after cleaning.
