In 1939 the population of Germany (including annexed Austria, Memelland, and the Sudetenland) was approximately 80,600,000. By 1940 Germany had invaded Poland, and had occupied a large amount of territory, circa 9,082,000 people. This puts the population of Germany at around 89,682,000 people, however, this figure is only approximate as it is difficult to factor in war deaths, births, natural deaths, and migration. After 1939 exact population figures are almost impossible to determine because of the aforementioned variables. It is also worth noting that the number of ethnic Germans in annexed Polish territory was probably, at the absolute most, 20%, and was probably closer to 7. Because of this the population may have been about 89.5 million but the actual number that would consider themselves German, and thus accept being part of Germany, was probably only about 81 million.
