how do I remove the key switch from a 1998 ford contour You have to remove the plastic trim around the steering column (behind the steering wheel). Put the key in the ignition cylinder and turn one click. There is a small hole on the side of the ignition cylinder, stick a small screwdriver into this hole and press hard. Pull out the ignition cylinder with the key.
In dash under steering wheel, between hood and parking brake release. There is a small panel with a finger hole to remove.

disconnect all electrical connectors under steering colunm. remove bolt from steering shaft and slide shaft apart. pop the shift cable off. remove the four bolt holding the colunm to the dash and remove the colunm. under the ignition switch will be a hole, with the key in the run position stick a small Phillips or what works best is a 20 torx screw driver into the hole and remove the ignition switch. follow proceedure for new colunm.
There is a small pinhole on the underside of the steering column. use a small awl or something similar and insert in the hole to release the ignition. Be patient, it can be difficult to hit the right spot! Good luck.

If you are losing fluid, you need to find out where it is going. Usually it is pretty easy to find most leaks: out of the seals on the pump, out of the lines or cooler, out of the steering gear, or out of the rack and pinion. Sometimes you'll have to poke a small hole in the rubber boot on the rack and watch for fluid coming out. Your steering column wouldn't be the problem. Hope this helps.
