Cut the shingles into three individual tabs. Center a tab over the peak and put one nail on each side above the tar strip. Lay the next one over it as you would a shingle and continue to the end. On the last one, you will have to surface nail the shingle.
33' for 3 tab, 25' for architect Actually, most three tab bundles only cover 32 sq feet. And architectural shingles cover about the same (it varies from manufacturer). But architectural shingles have less waste since there's no exact pattern to follow(unlike the slots in three tab shingles). You can save your scrap cut offs if they're 4-5" long. Owens corning shingles allow 4-5" offsets. You just have to be careful of your nail pattern. Oh, about that coverage, some 50yr shingles only cover 25sq feet, but most are 33 sq feet. Basically, one bundle for every sheet of plywood.
It depends on the type of shingle. A traditional "three tab" shingle will cover 21 lin. ft. of ridgecap.
