What do you mean promises? The marriage ceremony is just that; a ceremony. Anything said would be held in the same light as any other conversation. Generally, promises are not made for consideration, therefore they are not binding.

When people get married, normally the vicar says till death do us part, blah blah blah. But the couple may be asked to repeat after the priest and say: "I hereby take (Full Name) to be my lawfully wedded (Husband or Wife), for richer or poorer. In sickness and in Health. Till death do us part.

Hope this helped.

It's different at every person's wedding as they can make their own vows. Generally the vows are a promise to each other, that they will stay with each other through anything. "until death do we part" is the last bit, when you seperate.

Is the Ketubah signed before or during the Jewish wedding ceremony?

The Groom and two admissable witnesses sign the Ketubah before the wedding ceremony can begin. It is a legal document that lists in great detail how the groom promises to provide for the bride, as well as the recourse and rights she is guaranteed in the event that the marriage fails. A vital point in the ceremony is that the groom hands the signed contract to the bride, and that she accepts it FOR THE PURPOSE of marriage, and the document is then hers.
