The MAP (Manifold Air Pressure) sensor along with the status of other sensors such as the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) allows the computer to calculate the air volume that will be entering the combustion chamber. With that information the computer will be able to deliver the proper amount of fuel to maximize power and minimize emissions and waste.
