The Bible can "give to the inexperienced ones shrewdness, to a young man knowledge and thinking ability." Hebrew 13:4 says: "Let marriage be honorable among all, and the marriage bed be without defilement, for God will judge fornicators and adulterers." Sex provides a way for marriage mates to express and receive love and tender affection. Any children born of such a union benefit from having two parents who care for each other.-Colossians 3:18-21. Regarding sexual promiscuity, the Bible commands: "Flee from fornication." (1 Corinthians 6:18) What is one reason for this? The verse continues: "Every other sin that a man may commit is outside his body, but he that practices fornication is sinning against his own body." What results when the Bible's advice regarding sexual matters is ignored? Consider what is happening in the United States. That country now has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in the industrialized world-some 850,000 each year. Those who are sexually promiscuous also face major health risks, both physical and mental. For example, the journal Pediatricsreports: "Data suggest that sexually active adolescents are at high risk for depression and suicide." Think of the heartache and suffering that could be avoided if the Bible's practical counsel regarding sex were followed! Outside of marriage, sexual relations are forbidden. The Bible is quite specific on this matter. In the Law that God gave to the nation of Israel, it was stated: "You must not commit adultery." (Exodus 20:14) Also, 1Corinthains 6:9 states: "What! Do YOU not know that unrighteous persons will not inherit God's kingdom? Do not be misled. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men kept for unnatural purposes, nor men who lie with men," What is meant by the word "fornication"? It comes from the Greek word por·nei´a, which is sometimes used to apply to sexual relations between unmarried people. Elsewhere, such as at Matthew 5:32 and Matthew 19:9, the term is broader in meaning and refers additionally to adultery, incest, and bestiality. Other sexual practices between individuals not married to each other, such as oral and anal sex and the sexual manipulation of another person's genitalia, can also be designated as por·nei´a. All such practices are condemned-either explicitly or by implication-in God's Word

This fine of 50 shekels in verse 29 was quite large and reflected the seriousness of the crime. A shekel weighed about half an ounce, and in today's paper ( April 8th 2008) the price of silver was US$18:18 for an ounce, which makes 50 shekels worth $454:50 today. It doesn't sound like much, but in Jesus' day the daily wage was about a penny [or roughly a cent] a day so this was equivalent to a year and a half's gross wage - a considerable sum in anyone's language.
