Rabbits are naturally diggers. They dig burrows to keep cool. Your bunny is doing what comes naturally to cool himself and also to hide from predators. Try putting your bunny under a tree and putting frozen water bottles in with him. Also a place for him to hide, maybe a milk crate turned upside down.
Rabbits can live outside. Most do.
Boo Radley spends most of his time inside his house, avoiding contact with the outside world. He is reclusive and does not leave his home often.

Not really - most rabbits can be kept either outside or inside. Some people keep small rabbits inside because they are more vulnerable outside. Some people also keep larger rabbits inside because they are more like dogs.
