A rabies vaccine was developed in 1885 by Louis Pasteur and Émile Roux. Until that time all human cases of rabies were fatal. The vaccine produced is a killed vaccine. Today, only 1-2 deaths per year occur in USA from rabies. These are usually caused by bats.
