The opening and closing of this relatively heavy rear door is aided by the struts mounted on the left and right side inside the top of the door.

These struts are gas filled and assist in opening and closing the door by bearing the weight. If the seals on these start to leak, your door will be very "heavy" to open and will not stay open without additional support.

Replacement struts for your vehicle can be purchased at most auto parts stores.
