Since the atomic bomb was NEW and TERRIBLE, and scared the victor as much as it did the defeated, the argument has been: Why didn't the US just demonstrate the weapon's capabilities first, then after the Japanese have witnessed it, they might consider surrendering. This was the number one option to use verses actually dropping the weapon on a live city. The problem was twofold: 1. We only had three bombs (one was used for testing), and US servicemen were dying each day...A-bomb or not; the war wasn't stopping for any lunch breaks...so arranging for a "test" with high ranking enemy officials (Japanese) wasn't possible in the middle of a war. 2. Attitude: the attitude of senior US Military officers in 1945 was NOT "Politically Correct." For the most part, these men had been born in the late 1800's (President Eisenhower was born in 1890), they believed that a "horse was a horse" and "gun was a gun", no sugar coating it. Meaning; when you fight a war, YOU FIGHT TO WIN! There attitude was, don't test it, it's a weapon, USE IT! Those men have marched off into history. Today's "guys" would probably test the weapon.
