It depends on where you live. Farmers and orchardists should ensure that weather conditions are such that there is no appreciable drift to neighbouring properties. Surprisingly there are few juristrictions that actually say what appreciable means and of course will depend on the pesticide. If they are spraying with sulphur which stinks but is not really harmful (it is considered organic and is used to kill fungus it will smell like rotten eggs.) then you may have to put up with the smell. You did choose to live near an orchard after all. Because you can see a residue means the pesticide is likely to be a wettable powder at least that eliminates the most toxic carbimates. If they are spraying something more harmful like organophosphates (the stinky ones smell more like bad cabbage examples that smell like this are Orthene and Chlorpyriphos) then you chould complain to the orchardist or the local council authorities. A less harmful pesticide are synthetic pyrethroids which smell like gasoline as it usually dissolved in xylene with an emulsifier. If they have been spraying recently then they cannot spray anything too toxic as the withholding periods for these were weeks ago as the cherry harvest is underway now in most of the Northern hemisphere.

Does Coca Cola affect plant growth?

Coca-Cola or WaterI do know from an experiment that Sprite or Sierra Mist will preserve cut flowers. Coca-Cola is saving crops in India! Check it out on the web!!!Coke Used as Pesticide in IndiaWhile it is true that Coke is saving crops in India as mentioned on the web, it has nothing to do with using Coke in place of water. The reports are that Coke is being sprayed on the plants to control pests with amazing success. Whatever is causing Coke to be a good pesticide would also cause it to be a very poor choice for watering your plants. Stick with water! Natural vs Pesticide Laced SoilI have recently heard about an alarming discovery. It seems that the use of pesticides, which now may include Coke in India, is one of the contributing factors to our crops in the US having less nutritional value. The report I saw on some news channel said that scientists have found out that pesticides are killing off the micro bacteria in the soil that helps plants utilize its minerals and nutrients. They are speculating that this is one of the major causes of the reduction in nutritional content in our fruits and vegetables. WATER

Pesticides: A Failed Human Experiment?

How’s that for a powerful headline? It’s not altogether surprising, though, is it? It’s hardly a big news flash that pesticides are bad for us, bad for the environment and bad for the farmers who use them. The problem is, we didn’t really know just how bad they really were. One of my favorite news sources for natural health, Natural News today, had a disturbing article recently that made this announcement – “Chronic illness is widespread in many industrialized nations like the U.S., and more studies than ever are linking this disease epidemic to pesticide exposure. According to a new database designed to catalog these studies, pesticides are linked to cancer, reproductive dysfunction, diabetes, autism, asthma, birth defects, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases and more.” As Brenda Watson, author of the Detox Strategy, points out, “there are still more than 1,300 chemicals registered as pesticides in the U.S. These chemicals are formulated into thousands of pesticide products that are used agriculturally and available in the marketplace for home usage. In both 2000 and 2001, the total amount of pesticide used in the U.S. was approximately 5 billion pounds applied to crops, homes, schools, parks, and forests. In the United States alone, more than 18,000 products are licensed for use. We must remain vigilant about pesticide exposure in our surroundings and lives in general.” Beyond Pesticides, an environmental and public health group, decided to put together the Pesticide-Induced Diseases Database to raise awareness about the dangers of pesticides and to urge policy changes to get these chemicals removed from use. "A read through of the scientific literature on pesticides and major preventable diseases afflicting us in the 21st century suggests that one of the first responses called for is an all out effort to stop using toxic pesticides," explained Jay Feldmen, executive director of Beyond Pesticides. Beyond Pesticides hopes to see current risk assessment methods replaced by an alternatives assessment approach. Organic systems, for instance, perform far better than many of the high-chemical pesticide systems currently in use, and they do not harm the environment or consumers. The group has also put together a helpful guide called Organic Food: Eating with a Conscience, which expands upon how and why pesticides are harming life and the environment. This guide can be found at: http://www.beyondpesticides.org/org.

Which spray has recently been banned in the US?

Given the related/alternate questions I could only imagine we're referring to pesticides. Such a list has been added to the "related links" area. The Environmental Protection Agency allowed the residue tolerances for an insecticide named carbofuran (trade name Furadan) to expire at the end of 2009. This in essence bans the pesticide from all US uses, since the manufacturer will not continue to produce it.
